The purposes of education and research
In modern-day international society, English plays an ever-greater role as the language of international discourse. The aim of the Department of English Studies is to help to develop truly powerful, internationally minded citizens who have solid English proficiency and wide-ranging knowledge.
Overview
In required English classes, students acquire well-balanced speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Additionally, students choose their courses depending on their interests and study them in depth in small classes, allowing them to acquire specialized knowledge in language, literature, culture, and society. At the same time, cross-cultural understanding is deepened and developed. And in small, group seminars, professors help students to develop skills that will be needed in their fields of expertise, as well as in the writing of their theses, and later on, in the making of professional presentations.
The Department of English Studies is a place where students can fulfill their potentials to become cosmopolitan citizens, and acquire world-class confidence in their skills.
The Department of English Studies welcomes students with the following interests and qualities
- Those who are interested in the various languages, literatures, cultures, and societies of English-speaking countries.
- Those who are able to make efforts toward precisely understanding the language of ideas, and clearly expressing those ideas in both Japanese and English.
- Those who have intellectual curiosity and a spirit of inquiry.
The Evening Course
The purposes of education and research
The Department of English Studies Evening Course aims at graduating students who are highly skilled in their use of the English language as well as English studeies
The Department of English Studies Evening Coursegives special consideration to students who aim to balance work and study, while acquiring sophisticated and advanced English proficiency and deep knowledge of the languages, literature, culture, and society of the English-speaking world.This department also aims at imparting technical knowledge in the fields of language, literature, culture and society. Students are offered lectures and lessons in small classes where they can cultivate their English skills.
Overview
In the Department of English Studies Evening Course, students are mainly offered evening lessons (17:50-21:00). However, these lessons are quite similar to those of the Department of English Studies Day Course in terms of professors, subjects, and departmental goals. Because the Evening Course includes both traditional and non-traditional students, lessons are organized to provide discussions from various aspects. Students of the department can choose from one of three courses, and they can acquire technical knowledge in each field of study. Also, they can earn regular credits from the Day Course if they are constrained by regular school hours.
The Department of English Studies Evening Course welcomes students with the following interests and qualities:
- Those who are interested in the various languages, literatures, cultures, and societies of English-speaking countries.
- Those who are able to make efforts toward precisely understanding the language of ideas, and clearly expressing those ideas in both Japanese and English.
- Those who are able and willing to combine work with their studies.
